With the approach of my 3-cubed birthday, I decided to celebrate a little early with a creative confection for my closest compatriats and coworkers ;) Thanks to the help of my ever-indulgent sister, we took a simple sheet cake recipe and created a 3×3×3 chocolate masterpiece! All right, maybe “masterpiece” is stretching it a bit, but it was certainly fun to make ;D Each of the twenty seven mini-cubes is about one inch on each side, made from two pieces of chocolate sheet cake and some chocolate icing cement. Just making the raw cake, the icing, and then assemblying the mini-cubes took several hours even with Ali’s help. The aftermath of our first icing attempt. The freshly-made icing covered the tops easily, but the crumbly sides were uncooperative. The army of mini-cubes marches on through the icing storm. After letting the cake rest overnight, I resumed the cake making back at my place. It took a while to scrape up the icing, but eventually I got all the mini-cubes separated and grouped on plates. Once they were out, I re-melted the icing and touched up all the sides, letting it re-solidify before starting the assembly process. Finished at last! Not exactly the most clean-cut or even-sided of cakes, but tasty nonetheless :) |
